Bullfighting is a defining symbol of Spain. For Conchi Rios, it’s about artistry and expression. She’s one of the few professional female matadors in Spain and she’s up against a sexist industry.

For some it’s tradition. For others, controversy. In any case, it's a money-making business. Many men dream of becoming a matador. Conchi Rios was one of the few women with this same dream. She trained to be a ballerina as a child but in her early 20s, she understood that she wanted to be in the arena, not on the stage. Now, she's made it to the top of her profession. But the more successful she has become, the more resistance she faces. She has come up against sexism and finds it hard to get bookings for bullfights. When she is in the ring, some audience members prefer to go off to buy a drink - even though she's deemed as good as the some of the best male bullfighters. Bullfighting in Spain: One Woman Sees Red. Refugees Amjad, Omar, Zena and Shahinaz are living in Münster, Saarbrücken, Ahrweiler and Lausanne. However, they are not entirely present in their new homes. Every day they receive messages and videos from relatives and friends in Syria.

The two-part documentary follows four people who are torn between the security of their places of refuge in Europe and the news and videos from friends and relatives back in Syria that reach them daily on their smartphones. Through these messages and images, the film offers an intimate insight into life in war-torn Syria beyond the news broadcasts.

"I'm in Europe and safe, but I cannot escape the war. Every day it is here on my mobile phone." Every day, Amjad, Omar, Zena and Shahinaz receive messages and videos of shelling in Idlib, scenes from inside a Syrian jail and everyday life in an area controlled by the so-called Islamic State (ISIS). These are not the anonymous images we see on news broadcasts, but very personal accounts from people who have names and faces, with their own stories and destinies. The videos sent by phone are not professional productions; they are blurred, shaky and noisy, but they are authentic and they confront us with the daily experience of war - unofficial, personal war. The images intrude on the secure world of Europe, leaving the protagonists torn between their often idyllic new surroundings and the home and people they have left behind. Videos of bombardments or prisons burst into the picture-postcard backdrops of Lake Geneva or the Münsterland. ISIS propaganda films pop up in a café. The war is suddenly close - with a face and a voice. These images and the stories are all the more moving because they reach us directly, without any professional remove. They are images of war in the digital age, and this is a film about a time in which distant realities are brought close every minute of the day - in this case painfully close.

From New Orleans to New York, a train ride aboard the "Crescent" takes you on an extraordinary journey through American history.

This train journey begins in the "cradle of jazz" - New Orleans. Three famous express trains start and terminate here: the City of New Orleans, the Sunset Limited and the Crescent, named after a New Orleans neighborhood. Every morning at 7 a.m. the Crescent sets off from New Orleans on its 1,377-mile journey from the Deep South to pulsating New York City.

The distance is covered in around 31 hours. The route takes in various famous cities on the journey northeast. Birmingham, Alabama is also known as "Bombingham" after the attacks launched there by the Ku Klux Klan during the civil rights movement era between 1947 and 1965. The train then heads to Atlanta, the largest city in Georgia. Charlotte in North Carolina was named nearly 250 years ago after Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, the German wife of Britain’s King George III. Our next stop is Washington D.C., capital of the United States since 1800. Beforehand that honor had gone to a city further north: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where the Declaration of Independence was proclaimed in 1776. The final stop on this unique train journey is New York City aka the "Big Apple".

Weapons manufactured in the West and exported to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have ended up in the hands of Yemeni militia.

This is directly in contravention of international law and arms trade treaties. A documentary by the independent journalist network Arab Reporters for Investigative Journalism (ARIJ) reveals the shocking details. Egyptian journalist Mohamed Aboelgheit spent a year tracing and documenting the origin of weapons that have ended up in the hands of armed groups fighting in Yemen’s civil war. The countries of origin include Germany, the US, the UK, Austria, Spain, Switzerland, Belgium, Serbia, Bulgaria and others. Yet according to international treaties, these arms should never have reached Yemeni militia groups. Aboelgheit created social media accounts using false Yemeni names to get access to the informal trading networks and groups. In some cases the sellers were at pains to emphasize that the weapons were brand new and had never been fired. The documentary airs weighty evidence to show that Gulf states have been passing arms sold to their military on to other parties in Yemen - for political reasons. This is clearly in breach of "end user” certification laws intended to ensure that exported arms are not passed on to third parties.

Günther Hochhäuser is a passionate marksman who fights to maintain the traditions of his homeland, Upper Bavaria.

The Christian Social Union, who has been in power here for decades, could get a drubbing in upcoming elections -- to Hochhäuser’s dismay. Marksmen's clubs stand for everything Bavaria is famous for: folk costumes, cultural lore and tradition. Their chairmen include illustrious public figures, such as former Pope Benedict and Prince Max, Duke in Bavaria. Marksman Günther Hochhäuser says "We are a pillar of strength." But that pillar looks to be on increasingly shaky ground. Bavaria and even the seemingly timeless Inn-Chiemgau shooting club are being overtaken by the tides of change. Until recently, voting for the conservative CSU party was a given. But recent polls say that the CSU will suffer big losses in the upcoming state elections. Many Bavarians are angry that German interior minister Horst Seehofer, a member of the CSU, recently came close to bringing down the country's governing coalition. Axel Rowohlt reports.
