So all those times in Cassavetes's movies where it looked like the actors were fishing around in the dark for a character -- they really WERE fishing around in the dark for a character! Now I know that this is because Cassavetes didn't do what a director should do, which is DIRECT! His characters aren't realistic at all. They don't think. They don't feel. They just act at random and intensely, like animals, to disguise the fact that there's no character or thought there. All of the male characters sound like the same incoherent drunk and all the women act like sexist stereotypes. Only in SHADOWS is this not true, and that's because the film sucked so bad that Cassavetes was forced to write a script, reshoot the film with it, and actually develop a narrative with distinct characters.
