http://www.junglejoel.com - Tang Thai melons, or "Thai Long Muskmelons," are part of the muskmelon family (Cucumis melo L.) that includes Crenshaw melons, cantaloupes and casabas. I've seen Tang Thai seeds offered for sale in the United States as "rare Heirloom seeds," though this melon is actually quite common in Thailand.
After purchasing a Tang Thai melon in a local Thai market, Pu and I take it back to the "fruit laboratory" for inspection (my dining room table top). You can tell in the video that I had no idea what I was looking at, as I was asking her repeatedly what kind of melon this was, and every time she says, "Tang Thai." By the end of the video, she was obviously getting quite irritated!
Next to the Tang Thai melons in the market, were the "Tang Mo" melons (watermelons).
Like much of the produce available in southeast Asia, Tang Thai's grow best in a hot-and-humid environment. The flavor has often been described as somewhat bland, and the texture as a little bit "mushy." Still, if you are hungry, this melon is quite edible.
